“There was interest from Liverpool” – Tranmere coach reveals Reds tried to sign this Real Madrid starlet

Liverpool tried to sign Real Madrid starlet Marvin Park during his time at Tranmere

In an interview with the BBC (h/t Liverpool Echo), Tranmere Rovers academy coach Neil Garnett revealed that Liverpool showed interest in the Real Madrid starlet Marvin Park while the player was at Tranmere.

Park was born in Spain but had relocated with his family to England at the age of 9, where he stayed until he was 16.

The 20-year-old moved back to Spain four years back, where he is now flourishing, as he helped Madrid lift their first UEFA Youth Cup title back in August. The youngster was handed his senior team debut a month later by Zidane in a La Liga match. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

In an interview with BBC, Tranmere youth academy coach Neil Garnett spoke about Marvin’s time at Tranmere and mentioned the interest from Liverpool amongst other big Premier League clubs.

“His development was unreal. There was interest from Liverpool, Everton, Wigan, Blackburn and Manchester United. If he had stayed in England, the big clubs would have come and got him.”

Park was at Tranmere Rovers between 2009 to 2012, a period which saw Liverpool have three different managers. The Reds saw Roy Hodgson take the managerial helm from Rafael Benitez in the summer of 2010. The Englishman was later replaced by the legendary Sir Kenny Dalglish in January 2011.

Liverpool do not have a shortage of world-class wingers at the youth or senior level but it would be safe to assume that had the Reds signed and kept Marvin Park back then, the Spaniard could have had a fair amount of starts for us under his belt by now.

Born in 2000, the 20-year-old right-winger has the best years of his career ahead of him. If (and it’s a big if) Liverpool ever manage to sign him in the future, it’s safe to assume that the youngster would be welcomed back to Merseyside with open arms.
