Leon Goretzka reveals he considered a move to Liverpool in 2018
Speaking in an interview with The Athletic (h/t Metro), German midfielder Leon Goretzka revealed that he considered joining Liverpool in 2018.
A plethora of top clubs came calling when it was known that Goretzka was going to leave Schalke in 2018. Liverpool, apparently, were one of them.
Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy was just starting to bear fruit at Liverpool when the German manager showed interest in signing Goretzka. The midfielder revealed that moving to Merseyside was a possibility at that time.
“Liverpool were a consideration of course. They’re a great club.”
Goretzka decided to join Bayern Munich amidst the transfer rumours. After a slow start to his career at the Allianz Arena, he went on to win the treble with the Bavarian club last season.
He has been an important member of the Bayern side that has seen success in the past couple of years. Despite Liverpool also tasting great success, Goretzka believes it was the right decision to join the current UEFA Champions League holders. (h/t Metro)
The 25-year-old midfielder, however, made it a point to praise Jurgen Klopp’s work at Liverpool and express his happiness for his Premier League title success.
“Their development since Kloppo came has been amazing. We’re all a little proud of him winning the title, but I was 100 per cent sure that Bayern was the right move for me.”

If the ex-Schalke midfielder did choose Liverpool, it is obvious that he would have added quality to the Reds side.
Both Bayern and Liverpool have had similar starts to the season so far. Both the clubs have lost just one league game all season and are narrowly placed second in the table.
