Ruben Semedo responds to transfer rumours linking him with a move to Liverpool

Speaking to Portuguese outlet O Jogo (h/t Liverpool ECHO), Olympiacos defender Ruben Semedo responded to transfer rumours linking him with a move to other clubs, including Liverpool.

Liverpool have had a shocking run with injuries so far this season, with our defence suffering the most. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez will both miss a large chunk of the season due to injury.

Joel Matip was also substituted against Fulham at half-time due to a minor injury problem. As of now, the club has no fit senior centre-back available.

In the midst of all this, Jurgen Klopp is interested in Olympiacos centre-back Ruben Semedo to solve the club’s defensive crisis.

Responding to the rumours, Semedo did not deny that a move away from Greece was impossible.

“I heard that… It’s always good to see my name linked to big clubs. Let’s see what happens in the future.”

Semedo joined Olympiacos in June 2019 and has gone on to make 55 appearances already for the Greek side.

Fabinho Tavares has deputized at the back alongside Matip in the absence of Gomez and Van Dijk. Apart from them, the club has only inexperienced youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips to rely on.

Jordan Henderson playing at centre-back against Fulham is perhaps the best example of the injury situation at the club. Apart from that, Rhys Williams, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson have all had their own bouts with injuries at some point this season.

Considering the shortage of centre-backs at the club, a signing like Semedo could only help our backline. Whether or not Klopp decides to move for him is a different question.

But if we were to sign him, there may not be a lot of complaints from the fanbase. With a congested fixture list, there seems to be an urgent need for defenders at Anfield.
