Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul still a transfer target for injury-stricken Liverpool

A report by Italian outfit Tutto Udinese (h/t Liverpool Echo) states that Liverpool are still tracking Udinese midfielder, Rodrigo De Paul, for a transfer move in the future.

The Reds are interested in the Argentine international as they look to replace 30-year-old midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman’s contract expires this summer and he is yet to sign a new deal at the club.

De Paul is a regular fixture in the Udinese side and the Argentine national team. The dynamic central midfielder has 22 Serie A appearances to his name this season, where he has bagged 5 goals and 3 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The 26-year-old is currently on a contract that runs out in the summer of 2024. And the Italian side would not be willing to part ways with him for cheap.

Signing De Paul would be a good move

Udinese are looking for offers in the region of £35million for the former Valencia midfielder. The Reds could have used someone like him this season.

Liverpool are in the midst of a serious injury crisis where a plethora of defensive players have been injured. Due to that, midfielders have had to slot in at the back, thus creating a shortage of resources in the midfield.

Nevertheless, if the club do formalize their interest in De Paul next season, it would be a very wise move. The quoted transfer fee is not astronomical and the 26-year-old is arguably in the physical prime of his career.

With Jordan Henderson turning 31 this year and Wijnaldum not renewing his contract yet, the Argentine midfielder may even slot straight into the starting XI.
