Jamie Carragher slams Liverpool over poor home form

Speaking on Sky Sports (h/t Daily Mail), Jamie Carragher went on to berate the recent home form of Liverpool. The Reds’ legend said that his former club cannot keep using the same Virgil van Dijk excuse every time.

After almost four years, Anfield was breached this season. The Reds were unbeaten at their fortress since April 2017 when they lost to Crystal Palace. However, they have lost their last four Anfield fixtures against the likes of Burnley, Brighton, Manchester City and most recently Everton.

The problem with these losses are the records they broke and not the good ones. In losing to Everton, the Reds lost a Merseyside Derby at home for the first time since 1999. Their four-game losing streak at home is their worst run at Anfield since 1923.

The Champions League winner with Liverpool, Carragher went full blaze on his former side.

“I was very critical of Liverpool on commentary in the derby game and I seemed to upset a section of supporters. I have analysed this Liverpool team for three years under their best with Klopp and I come off shows like this and other fans say Carra is biased for Liverpool. Premier League champions, European Cup winners and best team in the world. There is nothing negative to say. But now, there is.”

Carragher also spoke about the fans that got perplexed and added his ‘Van Dijk’ point.

“If I have upset Liverpool fans I don’t want to apologise. What this team has done is amazing, we love them, but it doesn’t mean they are exempt from criticism. The problems Liverpool have, centre backs out, midfielders at centre back, does not mean they can’t win home games against Everton, Brighton, Burnley, West Brom.

“It’s not an excuse for individual games. No matter what problems you have as a Liverpool player, you can’t not win at home for six games. That is not acceptable. They have to find a way to win. I don’t want to use Virgil van Dijk as an excuse because Liverpool started the game against Everton with 10 Champions League winners.”

Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are a formidable duo
Both first-choice defenders are out with injury.

He added that Liverpool could look to tweak the systems a bit, where they add an extra attacking midfielder and play the defence a bit deeper due to their struggles. Liverpool still have a plethora of injuries to deal with as the trio of van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are potentially ruled out till the end of the season.

Even the likes of Henderson and Fabinho are out for a while and that has left Klopp with more concerns. Nonetheless, he will have to pick his side up from this slump with a crucial run-in to the end of the season approaching.
