Liverpool came close to signing Lyon defender Marcelo in the January transfer window

Speaking to Canal Plus, via HITC (h/t Liverpool Echo), Lyon centre-back Marcelo revealed that Liverpool were interested in a transfer move for him last month.

The Reds were active in the closing stages of the January transfer window amidst a serious injury crisis in defence. And the Brazilian revealed that he was one of the options for Jurgen Klopp to bring in.

Marcelo mentioned that the club contacted his agent but he remains focused on his current club.

“I feel good here, I feel that I can give more to Lyon. Over time, I hope that we will find a good solution. Liverpool? My agent spoke with them, but I feel good here. My dream is to win the championship with Lyon.”

A missed opportunity?

A report by L’Equipe earlier mentioned that the 33-year-old turned down Liverpool because the Reds offered him a 6-month contract. Marcelo’s comments come after Marseille’s Duje Caleta-Car also came out and said Liverpool wanted to sign him. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

The Reds did make a double swoop on deadline day, but it did not include either of the two defenders. Klopp signed Ben Davies from Preston North End and Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke.

Kabak has had a mixed bag of performances so far. He was impressive in the Reds’ 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over RB Leipzig. Davies, on the other hand, is yet to appear for his new club.

Marcelo would have certainly added heaps of experience to the Liverpool squad. The former Besiktas man has over 500 senior appearances in a career that started in 2007. (h/t transfermarkt)

Nevertheless, thinking about missed opportunities won’t be of any help now. Klopp must focus on what he has and use it to push for a top 4 finish.
