Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s father passes away after drowning in a lake
In a tragic bit of news, Jose Becker, father of Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson Becker, drowned in a lake near his home in Southern Brazil. Initial police reports say that he was swimming in a dam at his estate and that’s when the incident is said to have happened. The timing has been reported to be around 5 pm on 24th February.
Appropriate personnel was called before the news got out that his body had been found. Jose Becker was found by a friend and a worker at the estate, where he lived with his wife. While further details are yet to emerge, there has been words of support pouring in from the footballing fraternity.
Brazilian clubs Internacional and Fluminense were some of the first to offer their condolences.
‘It is with great sadness that we received the news of Jose Agostinho Becker’s death, the father of our ex-goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel,’ Internacional said.
Fluminense posted on social media: ‘The Fluminense Football Club deeply regrets the death of Jose Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Muriel and Alisson.’ tweeted Fluminense. ‘We wish all friends and family all the strength.’
Alisson was close to his father and previously spoke about how his father was an influence on his football career.
‘I have a family of goalkeepers,’ he said. ‘My father played for his work team, my mother played handball in school, and my grandfather played in amateur football.’And after all this, came my brother playing and then I started to like it, too.’
Since then, Alisson has gone on to achieve so much with Liverpool, winning the Champions League and Premier League.
Over a period of many years, he has established himself as one of the elite goalkeepers on the planet. One can only hope Alisson stays strong and emerges even stronger, with so much going on in his professional life. This is such a tragic event indeed.
