Transfer News: Liverpool contact Sporting Lisbon for Pedro Goncalves, who is labelled as the ‘next Bruno Fernandes’

According to Portuguese outlet Record (h/t The Express), Liverpool have already made contact with Sporting Lisbon over a possible transfer for star midfielder Pedro Goncalves.

The 22-year-old has played a massive part this season in the club’s first title in 19 years. He netted 22 times and provided 3 assists in 31 matches, and he has earned his comparisons with Bruno Fernandes.

The current release clause of Goncalves stands at £52million. However, the Portuguese champions want to offer a new contract to the Portugal U21 international that will also see his release clause go up to £69million.

Liverpool’s interest is not surprising as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his squad next season. This campaign was a letdown for the club due to injuries but the club now targets a top 4 finish to the season.

The next Bruno Fernandes?

The German manager would undoubtedly be itching to get back into the title race next season. And with Georginio Wijnaldum still not renewing his soon-expiring contract, the Reds could use someone like Goncalves in midfield.

There has also been a playmaker missing from our ranks for a while now. Assists and goals have dried up in midfield and the front three. The fullbacks have to shoulder much of the creative and scoring burden.

Signing a goal-hungry midfielder like the Portuguese youngster would add tangible contributions from the midfield. And at just 22 years of age, the best of Goncalves is still ahead of him.

It remains to be seen if his current club succeeds in tying him down to a new deal. If the Reds do want him, then sealing a transfer before any contract talks take place would be the most beneficial, considering the money we could save by avoiding a bloated release clause.
