Transfer News: Liverpool set to open talks for new contract with Fabinho after Ibrahima Konate signing

According to Italian journalist and transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are ‘progressing in negotiations’ in a bid to offer Fabinho a new contract at the club.

The Brazilian midfielder joined the Reds from AS Monaco three years back after the heartbreak in Kyiv. And since then, he has been a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League-winning side.

Romano goes on to say that the 27-year-old is open to extending his stay and agreeing to a new contract with the club. He was one of the most important players this season as well for Klopp.

In a season filled with injuries, the former AS Monaco midfielder shone through and did a stellar job in midfield and in defence. His role in the centre of the park with Thiago in the last few games of the season was vital to Liverpool securing a top 4 finish.

Another reason why this deal comes at a good time is the imminent departure of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutch midfielder has bid farewell to the club and will not renew his expiring contract in the summer.

It would have been a big blow to lose two vital first-team midfielders so close to each other. But with the club and the player both eager to extend the contract, fans should rest easy about the versatile midfielder’s future.

This news also comes on the day Liverpool confirmed their first signing of this summer. The club account tweeted that a deal with Ibrahima Konate, Leipzig defender, has been agreed.

After a torrid start to the season, the Reds secured a top 4 finish right at the end and a Champions League spot for the next campaign, which would be a great asset to have in player negotiations as well.
