Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold could be out of Euros after latest injury
According to Independent, Liverpool star defender Trent Alexander-Arnold could be ruled out of the Euros after his latest injury. The right-back was handed a start in England’s friendly game against Austria but walked off in the second half due to injury.
England got their preparations for the upcoming Euros underway with a friendly against Austria. With a few players yet to arrive in the side, Gareth Southgate opted to experiment a bit. A 4-3-1-2 formation was used as England edged the game with a 1-0 scoreline, courtesy of Bukayo Saka’s goal.
With the Euros coming up in over a week, England announced their squad for the summer extravaganza earlier this week. Leading up to the announcement, though, there had been a lot of frenzy in the media over Alexander-Arnold and his place in the squad.
It all started with Southgate omitting the Liverpool defender from the England squad for the last set of international fixtures in March earlier this year. The youngster bounced back from the setback and forced his way into the final squad for the Euros.
Trent could be out of the Euros
As Alexander-Arnold was handed a start for the country in the friendly, it proved to be a huge setback. While clearing the ball in the latter stages of the game, the young right-back felt some discomfort in his thigh. His frustrated groan indicated that it was something serious. While he tried to play it out after getting treatment, he couldn’t and was helped off before the game could finish.
It does not bode well for the player that the tournament starts in a week. Even Gareth Southgate all but confirmed that Arnold is very unlikely to play in the tournament.
“It looks like thigh (injury) but we don’t know the extent at the moment. Clearly it’s not a good sign that he had to walk off and looked in some discomfort with it, but we’ll know more in the next 24-48 hours.”
