According to the Independent, Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020, handing a major blow to the England national team.
Alexander-Arnold made a return to the national team setup for the summer extravaganza later this month after having been axed from the squad for the fixtures during March.
And the call-up was a richly deserved one as Alexander-Arnold had ended the 2020/21 season in fine form, helping Liverpool clinch a third-place finish in the Premier League.
Having made his comeback, Alexander-Arnold got a chance to stake a claim for the starting berth at right-back in the tournament when he was handed a start in the warm-up game against Austria. However, things did not go as per plans for the Liverpool ace, as he limped off with a thigh issue in the final minutes of the game.
After the defender underwent scans, it has now been determined that the injury is a significant one and Alexander-Arnold will not be fit in time to feature in the Euro. And the English FA confirmed
the same in a statement, while adding that a replacement will be named after England’s second warm-up clash against Romania on Sunday.“Gareth Southgate will not confirm a replacement until after Sunday’s return to the Riverside Stadium for the warm-up fixture against Romania.”
This will come as a major blow for Alexander-Arnold as well as the England national team, even though manager Gareth Southgate had named as many as four right-backs in the squad. Indeed, apart from the Liverpool ace, the Three Lions also have Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker.
But it is safe to say that none of them offer the same kind of attacking pedigree that Alexander-Arnold does. It now remains to be seen who is selected to replace the Liverpool star. We wish Trent a speedy recovery!
