Gareth Southgate slams Liverpool star Jordan Henderson for penalty miss against Romania
England manager Gareth Southgate was not happy with Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson after he missed the penalty against Romania (h/t Express). It wasn’t so much the miss that irked Southgate. The fact that Calvert-Lewin was supposed to take the spot-kick and Henderson snatched it off him was the problem.
England look all set for their European Championship campaign. They won both their warm-up friendlies against Austria and Romania. Southgate also named his final 26-man squad with Ben White replacing the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Henderson took the penalty instead of Calvert-Lewin
Last night, England took on Romania for the last friendly ahead of the tournament. Marcus Rashford’s penalty was enough to get the win. However, England had another spot-kick awarded to them for a foul on Calvert-Lewin. As the Everton striker was about to take the ball for the kick, Liverpool captain, Jordan Henderson took the ball off him and tried his luck.
His shot was saved by the keeper as England held on. Southgate was visibly upset at the whole incident. He had to warn Henderson that this thing won’t be repeated and the penalty will be taken according to the rank.
“We had Marcus Rashford on penalties then James Ward-Prowse but both came off. We expected Dominic Calvert-Lewin to take it and I was expecting Hendo to go over to him and let him take it. We will pull rank next time.”
