Transfer News: Liverpool interested in Pascal Gross

According to transfer news from Tutto Mercato Web (h/t Express), Liverpool have decided to turn their focus towards Brighton & Hove midfielder Pascal Gross instead of teammate Yves Bissouma.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Bissouma for quite some time now. However, the Malian international isn’t keen on a move up north while his £50m valuation has put off the Reds as well. Instead, they have now switched their focus to his teammate, Gross. (h/t Express)

Liverpool are interested in signing Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma if Wijnaldum does not renew his contract at Liverpool.
Liverpool set to end interest in Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The German playmaker, who turned 30 today, has been with Brighton since 2017, having arrived from German club FC Ingolstadt. Over the years, Gross has grown into a key player for the Seagulls, acting as their primary chance-creator with his ability to whip in crosses or play precises passes forward.

Indeed, since the 30-year-old signed for Brighton four years ago, only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has created more chances in the Premier League than him. Gross enjoyed a fairly productive 2020/21 campaign during which he managed a return of three goals and ten assists from 40 games in all competitions.

With his contract expiring in a year, the German is said to be looking for a new challenge in his career, and Liverpool are among the clubs interested. (h/t Express)

Liverpool need a new midfielder this summer, following the exit of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman has decided to sign for Paris Saint-Germain with his contract with the Reds running out. His departure has left a gaping hole in midfield for the Reds.

While Gross wouldn’t exactly be a like-for-like replacement, the Brighton midfielder does offer something different from midfield with his playmaking abilities. Add in his experience and proven pedigree at this level, the German can be a good, short-term option for Liverpool.

Other names that have been linked with Liverpool include Bundesliga duo, Denis Zakaria and Florian Neuhaus. It remains to be seen who the Reds decide to go after this summer.
