Jordan Henderson could feature in England vs Scotland as Gareth Southgate gives fitness update
Speaking to reporters (h/t Liverpool Echo) before England take on Scotland in UEFA Euro 2020, Gareth Southgate revealed that Jordan Henderson would be available for the game tonight.
The England midfielder was included in the 26-man England squad despite underlying fitness problems. He was also an unused substitute against Croatia in England’s first group game.
However, Southgate has mentioned that Henderson was included in the squad because of what he brings to the team outside the pitch, apart from his talent on it.
“What he brings to the group on the training pitch, what he brings around the camp, his experience, the way he can speak to some of the other players in those quiet moments when you’re in around the hotel… It’s a great advantage for us to have him in with the team.”
Henderson vs Robertson?
The Three Lions manager then went on to reveal that he is training consistently. Henderson, according to Southgate, is available for the game against Scotland and could play a role in the match that could see Andy Robertson start as well.
“Both players (Henderson and Harry Maguire) are training with the team. Both are available for tomorrow night and we’re looking forward to them being part of the games.”
Henderson saw his season end prematurely but is racing back to full fitness. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, as well as the fans, would hope that Henderson is used optimally and not too much.
Any injury now could come as a big blow for England as well as Liverpool. The former Sunderland midfielder is an important part of the Reds squad and it is great to see Southgate praise his leadership skills.
