Liverpool, Man United, Arsenal want Ajax commercial director Menno Geelen

According to the Echo, Liverpool could be set for a battle with arch-rivals Manchester United and Arsenal for the signing of Ajax director Menno Geelen.

The 39-year-old’s reputation has been on a rapid rise as he has been responsible for bringing business into the club. Having started out as the account manager at Ajax in 2010, Geelen was promoted to head of sponsorship, before he took over the role of commercial director in 2016.

Geelen has done some brilliant deals in recent times, which has now forced clubs like Liverpool to sit up and take up notice as they look for ways to boost revenues during the pandemic-hit market, according to sports marketer Chris Woert. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

“Menno is one of the most talented commercial directors in the Netherlands. He is now in demand by Super League clubs, especially the English clubs. Also because he is a good connector. He has done a lot commercially but also provides a platform for the fans. That is now recognised in England.

Woert also added on how Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar get recognition but Menno Geelen has been a key pillar in Ajax’s strong financial position despite the current financial climate.

“(Marc) Overmars and Van der Sar are often mentioned, but a number of headhunters have approached him. Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal could be possible. He’s a great talent that is being attracted.

“He did not want to say anything about it and says he is concentrating on Ajax. But headhunters are now looking to see if he wants to make a switch. He’s only 39, so I don’t know if he wants it now. But it’s a nice reward if he makes the switch to the Premier League.”

It remains to be seen if Liverpool do act on the reported interested in Geelen. While Liverpool have been managed well, there is always room for further improvements and developments. And the 39-year-old can make it happen.
