Transfer News: Liverpool join Manchester United in pursuit of John McGinn from Aston Villa

According to Not The Old Firm (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have taken an interest in Scotland and Aston Villa midfielder, John McGinn.

The report mentions that Manchester United have shown interest in the player as well and the two Premier League giants have taken note of the star who could cost them a cool £50million.

Liverpool have lost midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to Paris Saint-Germain. McGinn has impressed for the Villans since his move in 2018 from Hibernian FC.

The 26-year-old central-midfielder was also a significant member of Dean Smith’s side in the latest campaign, making 37 appearances in the league as Villa finished 11th in the table.

Liverpool and Man United want McGinn

The Reds don’t have a shortage of names on paper if they want to replace Wijnaldum. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara are strong contenders for that position.

Apart from that, Curtis Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita offer further cover. But with injuries, fatigue and packed fixture schedules, ‘the more the merrier’ is a phrase that suits the Reds perfectly.

However, the aforementioned price tag seems a bit steep. The Reds are also looking elsewhere, with the Liverpool Echo mentioning the club’s interest in Leicester’s Youri Tielemans and Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips.

McGinn is currently playing for the Scotland national team at the UEFA Euro 2020, alongside Andrew Robertson.

More Liverpool News:

It remains to be seen if Liverpool choose to replace Wijnaldum with a midfielder from within the squad or if they dip into the transfer market. But one thing is for certain – the club must find a suitable solution to the departure of a midfielder that made an astounding 51 appearances for them this season.
