Liverpool have serious interest in Aston Villa star John McGinn
According to The Athletic, Liverpool have a “very real” interest in Aston Villa’s Scottish midfielder John McGinn, with manager Jurgen Klopp believed to be a huge admirer.
McGinn has been with Aston Villa since 2018, having signed from Scottish outfit Hibernian FC. In his three years with the Midlands outfit, the 26-year-old has grown into one of their most pivotal players alongside captain Jack Grealish.
McGinn helped Villa achieve promotion to the Premier League in his debut season and has made huge strides upon arriving in the English top-flight. The Scottish international missed just one league game all season long in 2020/21, highlighting his importance to Dean Smith’s side.
The aforementioned report goes on to claim that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been left impressed by McGinn, while also adding that the Reds’ interest in him is “very real”. It has been claimed that the German tactician has asked first-choice left-back Andrew Robertson about his Scotland teammate.
Liverpool are in the market for a new central midfielder following the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman opted not to renew his contract with the Merseyside giants and instead ended up penning a bumper deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
With his departure leaving a glaring hole in the midfield department at Liverpool, McGinn can be considered as a viable replacement. However, Aston Villa tied the Scotsman down to a new long-term contract till 2025 in December last year and value him in the range of £45-£50m.

McGinn, in a number of ways, would be the ideal replacement for Wijnaldum. Be it his work-rate, ability on the ball and the knack of contributing goals in crucial moments. Whether Liverpool are willing to meet the valuation for him this summer remains to be seen, though.
