Transfer News: Liverpool cool down interest in Florian Neuhaus
According to transfer news from Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have decided to cool down on their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach’s German midfielder Florian Neuhaus this summer.
Liverpool are in the transfer market for a new central midfielder in the ongoing transfer window. The need for a new player in the position has risen due to the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Netherlands captain called it quits upon the expiry of his contract, signing for Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.
This has left a huge vacancy in the centre of the park for Liverpool considering how pivotal a part Wijnaldum was for Jurgen Klopp & co. Neuhaus, to that end, had emerged as one of the most heavily-linked transfer targets for the Merseyside giants over the past few weeks. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
Neuhaus has grown into one of the most reliable central midfielders in the Bundesliga over the past couple of years. The 24-year-old enjoyed a particularly impressive 2020/21 season which has helped him gain a place in the German national team as well.
And, German journalist Florian Plettenberg (h/t Liverpool Echo) had recently claimed that the Reds were plotting to make a concrete offer for Neuhaus once the UEFA Euro 2020 was out of the way. However, it is now being claimed that it may not be the case, with Liverpool now cooling their interest in him.
Neuhaus had a release clause worth £34.25m in his release clause which expired last month. That Liverpool chose not to trigger it is indicative that they are not yet decided on the 24-year-old as their primary target. And, with the clause expiring, Gladbach can now command a much higher fee for their midfielder, which further lessens the chances of a transfer. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

The report does add that Liverpool will continue monitoring Neuhaus over the course of the summer. But they are keeping their options open with the interest in the German international considerably cooling down, especially now that his release clause is no more in play.
