Transfer News: Chelsea ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United in Saul Niguez pursuit
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (h/t The Mirror), Chelsea have submitted an enquiry for Liverpool target and Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez.
The Spanish midfielder is the subject of interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United. But it seems like the Blues are ahead of the two teams in this particular transfer pursuit. (h/t The Mirror)
Thomas Tuchel, according to the report, wants Saul to fill the gap left by Billy Gilmour’s loan departure to Norwich City. The UEFA Champions League winners already have Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, and Jorginho in that position.
But midfield is one area where the Reds also have a gap to fill. Georginio Wijnaldum will ply his trade in Ligue 1 next year as he left Liverpool on a free transfer to PSG after seeing out his contract. (h/t ESPN)
Saul wanted by Liverpool and Chelsea
Saul could be that man who takes over the helm in Liverpool’s midfield from the 30-year-old Dutchman. Niguez, who is a full Spain international at the age of 26, is a dependable option for Diego Simeone.
With an impressive injury record during his stay in Madrid, he can replicate the year-long availability that Wijnaldum offered Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. But for that, the club would have to tussle with the two London clubs.
Saul’s versatility is also something that would impress his suitors. The Real Madrid youth academy product can play on either flank as well as in midfield. Hence, it would strengthen multiple positions with just one signing.

But it remains to be seen if the Reds try to formalize any interest they may have in the ex-Rayo Vallecano. However, any failure to sign him should not deter the club in their pursuit of a Wijnaldum replacement.
