As confirmed by the club’s official website, Liverpool starlet Oakley Cannonier has signed his first professional contract with the club.
The 17-year-old Cannonier signed for Liverpool at the Under-12 level, arriving from hometown club Leeds United. The young forward has made rapid strides through the age-group levels, breaking into the Reds’ Under-18 setup last season.
Cannonier went on to feature eight times for Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s Under-18 side in the U18 Premier League last season, finding the back of the net on four occasions. Primarily a striker, the teenager is known for his finishing abilities and can also play as a No. 10 as well.
Liverpool fans will remember him most for his involvement in that “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona at Anfield.
In the game when the Reds defied the odds to scale a historic comeback and eliminate the Catalan giants from the UEFA Champions League, the teenager played his part as a ball boy, showing great awareness to hand Trent Alexander-Arnold the ball who took a quick corner to catch Barcelona cold as Divock Origi found the back of the net.
Having played a role, even though it was a small one, in Liverpool’s historic UEFA Champions League triumph in the 2018/19 season as a ball boy, Cannonier will now be hoping to make a mark at the club as a footballer.
Following the signing of his first professional contract, the 17-year-old, who has represented the England national team at the Under-15 and Under-16 levels, will be hoping for a bigger involvement in Bridge-Wilkinson’s side for the upcoming campaign.
Congratulations to the youngster on his first pro-contract!
