Transfer News: Liverpool lead the race for Atletico Madrid ace Saul Niguez

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are leading the chase for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, who could be available at a price way lower than his release clause.

Chelsea and Manchester United are also linked with the Spaniard. However, the Reds are believed to be leading the pack and Madrid could be willing to part ways with the 26-year-old for £35million.

That is a significantly lower price than his £128.9million release clause. Los Colchoneros are already looking to strengthen their midfield with the potential addition of Rodrigo de Paul – another player linked with the Reds recently.

Georginio Wijnaldum will not be a Liverpool player next season. The Dutch international has signed for PSG on a free transfer, and has left a big void to be filled in Liverpool’s midfield.

Saul to Liverpool looking likely

Saul can be the man to replace Wijnaldum if Michael Edwards can get a deal across the line. Jurgen Klopp would know that strength in depth will matter if we are to fight for trophies on four fronts next season.

The Atletico midfielder brings with him experience and versatility, making him an exciting prospect for any of his suitors. At 26, he can give a number of years to his next club if he decides to leave the La Liga champions.

Saul’s potential addition can also ease the burden on the young shoulders of Curtis Jones. The 20-year-old looks like a top player but needs time to develop into a regular starter under Klopp.

It remains to be seen if the Reds can outmuscle other parties interested in the midfielder but if they do, this is one signing that the fanbase would unanimously be cheering for.
