Transfer News: Liverpool register interest in long-time Arsenal target Houssem Aouar

According to ESPN, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have all entered the race to sign Arsenal transfer target Houssem Aouar.

The French midfielder has been linked with the Gunners for a while, and they even had a €40million bid for him turned down by Lyon last summer.

Despite United and Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder, the report mentions that Spurs and Arsenal are ahead in the pursuit for the French international. Aouar has spent his entire career in Lyon, and has racked up 127 Ligue Un appearances already.

The Reds are not alien to doing business with Lyon but their relationship with the French outfit may not be the same as it was before the Nabil Fekir saga in 2018, where the French playmaker came close to joining Liverpool but the deal failed to happen. (h/t ESPN)

Aouar on LFC’s radar

There is a big hole in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield in the shape of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman decided to run down his contract at Anfield and joined PSG as a free agent this summer.

Aouar can be a viable replacement and is someone who can spend a number of years at Liverpool. At the age of 23, he still has his best years ahead of him and can develop to become an even better player under Jurgen Klopp.

Out of the four clubs mentioned above, only two can offer Champions League football next season – the Reds and the Red Devils. Arsenal have no European presence next campaign while Spurs will play in the inaugural season of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

It remains to be seen if that could be a factor in any possible deal for Aouar. But having UCL football certainly helps when trying to acquire new players.
