Transfer News: Liverpool face competition from Spurs for Inter Milan ace Nicolo Barella

According to The Express, Liverpool and Spurs are competing to sign Italy and Inter Milan midfielder, Nicolo Barella.

The 24-year-old is on the radar of the two English clubs after a flying season. He helped Inter win their first Scudetto in 11 years before playing a crucial part in Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 triumph, where they beat England in the final.

Interestingly, a report from Spanish outlet Marca (h/t The Express) claims that Tottenham Hotspur, under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, are pushing the hardest to sign Barella, with a potential £55million bid in the pipeline.

Barella could well be the replacement Liverpool need for Georginio Wijnaldum in their midfield. The Dutchman left the club this summer after running down his contract and joined PSG.

Barella wanted by LFC and Spurs

Wijnaldum’s departure has left a hole in the Reds’ midfield. Liverpool’s injury troubles last season further complicate matters.

A number of Jurgen Klopp’s star players, including midfielders, missed a fair few games because of fitness issues. With the ever-present Wijnaldum now at PSG, there is a need for a new face to be added to the ranks to assuage any injury-related fears.

Replicating Wijnaldum’s work rate and availability won’t be an easy task, but it doesn’t mean that Liverpool should give up looking for a potential replacement altogether. Barella has managed to garner a solid reputation in the past few months.

And if he does join the Merseysiders, then he could well be a useful long-term asset in their ranks. With Jordan Henderson already 31, Barella could even be a long-term successor for the Englishman.
