Liverpool blow in Kylian Mbappe pursuit

According to Marca via Radio France Internationale (h/t Liverpool Echo) Liverpool are set to miss out on Kylian Mbappe, amid Lionel Messi potentially joining PSG.

The report adds that Messi joining the French club would force them to offload Mbappe. However, Liverpool would not be the destination for the 22-year-old. Instead, the World Cup winner would potentially to join Real Madrid.

It suggests that Mbappe has a year left on his deal. However, the player won’t be signing an extension with the club as he has his sights set on a transfer to the Spanish capital.

What does this mean for Liverpool?

Previously, both parties have flirted with the idea of joining forces. Mbappe had kind words to say when Liverpool won the 20119/20 Premier League. The Frenchman praised the work ethic and mentality of the side.

“This season, Liverpool have been a machine in the Premier League. They have made winning look easy but the truth is that it is never easy.

“To be as ruthless as they have been would come from lots of hard work in training and from having a very good manager.”

Manager Jurgen Klopp returned the praise, suggesting that there are not a lot of reasons to not sign Mbappe. However, added that it would be difficult for Liverpool to afford him.

“OK, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him. What a player he is. But it is about the money of course. No chance. Absolutely no chance. Sorry for killing that story.”
