Liverpool duo backed to form the best centre-back partnership in PL by club legend

Jamie Carragher feels Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate could form a great partnership

According to an interview done on UMM YouTube Channel (h/t Express), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to form the best centre-back pairing in the league this season.

Liverpool completed the £36million signing of Konate from RB Leipzig at the end of May. He has been their only acquisition this summer, but given the club’s injury troubles at the back last season, it has been a clever signing.

Moreover, Van Dijk, who was injured for nearly nine months of last season due to an ACL injury, has returned to training while he has also featured in Liverpool’s pre-season games. The Dutchman was considered as one of the best centre-backs in the 2019/20 season when Liverpool won the Premier League.

Talking to the UMM YouTube channel (h/t The Express), Jamie Carragher talked about how Van Dijk and Konate could form the best centre-back partnership in the league this season.

“That has the potential to be the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League.

“Van Dijk is the best centre-back in the Premier League. Konate I’ve watched for Leipzig. He looks like he’s got the presence. He’s certainly got that pace.”

Van Dijk, who missed out on featuring for the Netherlands at the Euros, has worked on getting back to 100% fitness, while Konate has also joined the Reds on the back of a good campaign with RB Leipzig. The Frenchman made 21 appearances in all competitions for the German outfit last season and would now be raring to go with Liverpool.

Besides the duo, Liverpool also have the likes of Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Nat Philips, and Rhys Williams in their ranks, providing incredible cover at the back for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to compete on all fronts next season, something that is certainly possible with a backline manned by Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
