Done Deal: Ben Davies joins Sheffield United on loan

Liverpool have confirmed that Ben Davies has completed a move to Sheffield United for a season-long loan (h/t LFC on Twitter).

The English defender became Sheffield United’s first signing of the summer under Slavisa Jokanovic. It is to be noted that the Blades don’t have an option to buy him after the completion of the loan, meaning that he will return to Liverpool.

Ben Davies’ move to Liverpool was honestly one of the most puzzling transfers of the January window. The defensive crisis at Liverpool was known but with Ozan Kabak coming in on loan and the likes of Nat Phillips, Rhys Williams, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho all stepping up, it hardly made sense to go after the former Preston North End man.

Ben Davies did not play a single competitive game for Liverpool.

The deal wouldn’t have raised so many questions had Davies played some games for Liverpool. Instead, he was lingering on the benches for the entire second half of last season and failed to get even one game for the Reds. With the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip returning and the addition of Ibrahima Konate, Davies was clearly not going to get any sort of game time.

Davies happy to join Sheffield United

Hence, he was allowed to leave the club on loan. Sheffield United, who got relegated last season, opted to take him on board. However, there is no option for a permanent deal. Davies spoke about the move after it was made official. (h/t BBC Sport)

“I’m really happy to be here. I always liked playing against Sheffield United and the atmosphere. Hopefully I can fit into the manager’s plans well. I’ve missed match days and the buzz of having fans in grounds. That’s part of the excitement of coming here and hopefully having a successful year.”

This was perhaps a decision that was best for everyone involved. Sheffield United got their first signing under Jokanovic, Davies will probably get to feature on a regular basis and Liverpool have gotten a man off their books, at least temporarily.
