“Won’t be far away” Graeme Souness on Liverpool’s title challenge

Graeme Souness weighed in on what the 2021/22 season could bring for Liverpool (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The Reds legend suggested that his former club would be around the title picture. He went on to add that this season would go down to the wire and a winner will not be decided until April, but expected Liverpool to be in the mix.

“I think they will be there or thereabouts. I think the top four will be fighting all the way and I will go as far as saying the league won’t be decided by April, it will go right to the wire as there are some very good teams this year.”

However, Souness said he has concerns over Liverpool’s midfield. He suggested that Jurgen Klopp could do with additions in the middle of the park. However, with Virgil van Dijk returning, he backed the team to put on a strong challenge.

“I’d like to see something else in midfield. It is going to be a long hard season but they have Virgil Van Dijk back, and Liverpool won’t be far away.”

Could Liverpool go all the way?

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City have hinted at their ambitions by making big signings. Liverpool, so far, have only signed Ibrahima Konate. Their inactivity in the market could prove to be a factor that might give an edge to others.

As Souness said the club could do something different in midfield. Klopp started with James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita in their opener against Nowich City.

Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have had their troubles with injuries. With Milner recently turning 35, it could be difficult for the Englishman to keep up with the intensity.

Hence, someone to backup Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara could come in handy.
