Nat Phillips signs new contract at Liverpool on transfer deadline day

It seems like Nat Phillips is here to stay at Liverpool this season, with the defender putting pen to paper on a new contract at the club.

The official Liverpool website has confirmed that the 24-year-old Phillips has signed a long-term deal at the club. The Athletic (Subscription Required) mention that the contract is four years long.

The report also adds that Phillips was expected to leave Anfield on transfer deadline day. But with no suitable offers on the table, the club decided to reward his performances in the second half of last season with a new deal.

Speaking to the club media, Phillips expressed his happiness at signing the new contract. The Englishman made 17 Premier League appearances last season as he helped the club seal a top-three finish in the league.

“Obviously, after last year, it’s really nice to get that reward from the club. I’m happy to be sticking around and being available if the club need to call on me again.”

Phillips added that he is happy that the club recognized his contributions last season. He further mentioned that he is excited for the next chapter in his career, but that may be one without regular playing time.

“I’m excited for the next chapter and just to see what that brings. It is nice that the club has shown me that recognition and hopefully I can bring more of the same with whatever opportunities come my way.”

There is no longer a defensive injury crisis at the club. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez are back from their long-term injuries, raring to go. The Reds have also added Ibrahima Konate to their ranks this summer.

It would have been a smart move if the Reds could have offloaded Phillips this summer when his stocks were high after an impressive season. Nevertheless, time will tell if potentially keeping him at the club is the right choice in the long term.
