Glen Johnson does not believe that Liverpool are in the race to sign Kylian Mbappe
According to an interview done with Betting Odds (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson does not believe that Jurgen Klopp & co. can compete with Real Madrid for the signature of Kylian Mbappe next year.
Liverpool, who currently possess the likes of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, Diogo Jota, and Divock Origi in their squad, were linked with Paris Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe over a potential move next summer.
The Reds were said to be planning to sign the Frenchman on a free transfer next year as the 22-year-old will be out of contract by then, provided he does not sign an extension with the French outfit.
However, signing the player will be no easy feat as Real Madrid are also heavily interested in the forward as the Spanish outfit also made a £189million bid to sign the youngster in the summer window gone by.
This has led to former Reds defender Glen Johnson believing that Liverpool cannot compete with Madrid as he feels the Spanish outfit can provide the Frenchman a big contract next season. He told Betting Odds (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“Everybody is going to want him (Mbappe) if he’s available, however, I can’t see how Liverpool can compete with a big bid from Real Madrid as they’ve just saved themselves £180 million by not signing him in August.
“They’re now £180 million better off to offer him a bigger contract, so it’s hard to see how his other suitors can compete with that. It could even come down to the relationships he has with certain players at other clubs who may try and turn his eye.”

While that is the case in the eyes of Johnson, it remains to be seen how things pan out if the striker is available on a free transfer next summer.
