Nat Phillips speaks up on his new contract at Liverpool

In an interview with ECHO, Nat Phillips opened up on quite a few subjects after signing a new deal with Liverpool. The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a new four-year deal with the Reds over the last week and said that he was very motivated to repay the trust shown in him by the new contract.

Not a lot of people could have predicted the epic injury crisis Liverpool had last season. All of the first choice defenders were ruled out for the entire season or so. That meant that Liverpool had to turn to their academy and reserves for a solution and Nat Phillips raised his hand. The robust defender was thrust into the deep end.

Not only did he survive but he also impressed rather well. Within the second half of the season, Phillips had become a favourite of the fans with his no-nonsense defending. He made sure he was there to keep things tidy at the back as Liverpool pushed into the Champions League places.

Phillips was handed a new deal

Phillips was handed a new four-year deal by the club last week and it showed that they still have faith in him despite the return of those injured players. The defender spoke about his new contract and how he is motivated to repay the trust.

“When he put that belief in me to fill the spot when we had a lot of injuries, then for the rest of the season, his faith remained in me. With the new deal, it’s a huge compliment for myself and it’s something I am motivated to try and repay to the club and the fans. I made my debut last year and went on to have a heavy involvement in the season.

“And then played a part in securing Champions League qualification which was something we had to change some of our aspirations and aims for throughout the season but that’s what it was at the end of the season to achieve that and having gone through so much change, and experienced so much in the year, it was huge for me. Last season didn’t go the way we wanted it to, in the way we hoped. Obviously, the way it ended was like a sweet end to a bitter season but we want to put things right nevertheless and we have no reason not to.”

It will be a very different season for Nat Phillips. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are back while Ibrahima Konate was signed. The ex-Bolton defender might not get to feature on a regular basis but given the season he had last time around, he should be given some chances to impress.
