Liverpool fans react as 3-0 Leeds United win is overshadowed by Harvey Elliott injury
Liverpool beat Leeds United by a comprehensive scoreline but a major injury to wonderkid Harvey Elliott overshadowed the positive result for Jurgen Klopp’s men at Elland Road.
The Reds started this game needing a win to match Manchester United and Chelsea’s points tally at the top. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after some great link-up between Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold led to a clear-cut chance.
A second goal followed in the second half after Fabinho converted from close range after a corner kick. But things took a turn for the worst when a senseless tackle from Pascal Struijk seriously injured youngster Harvey Elliott.
The 18-year-old was given the nod in midfield again, this time alongside Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho. But he had to exit the game on a stretcher after a gruesome injury that could put him out for a long time.
Liverpool cruise to 3-0 win
He was replaced by Jordan Henderson and perhaps the players were able to play with the same intensity again because Elliott was seen applauding the fans when he was being taken off. Nevertheless, it put a dark cloud over any positive event that followed from thereon.
Sadio Mane kept on missing chance after chance after he finally struck close to the end of the game to make it 3-0. The win sends Liverpool third in the table, trailing on goal difference.
