Michael Owen points at Liverpool problem that needs to be addressed next year

According to BT Sports (h/t Daily Star), Michael Owen feels that Liverpool needs to address the issue of ageing players in their main squad.

The former Liverpool player explained that such problems should be solved as early as possible. During the day of the UEFA Champions League fixture against AC Milan, Owen said

“I think Liverpool are going to address it. What I think the big concern is everyone is going to be old at the same time in three or four years.”

Jordan Henderson’s screamer saw them clinch victory against the Italian team. The Reds are currently placed at the top in their Champions League group after one match.

The Anfield faithful had to endure a difficult season last year as it was filled with injuries to important players. They did manage to finish the season in the top 4 but failed to win any silverware last campaign.

Owen also remarked on the age of some of the core players of the Merseyside team.

“Look at the front three, Firmino, Salah, and Mane, all late 20’s. Another three or four years you’re not going to replace one, it all of a sudden goes bump and you’ve got to replace two of them. I think that’s the general around the team, the Matip’s, the Van Dijk’s they’re all late 20’s now.”

The average age of the current Liverpool squad is 27. That makes them the sixth oldest team in the Premier League. Their fellow title contenders like Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea have younger sides as compared to the Reds.

Teams like Chelsea and Manchester United spent a huge sum of money to bring young talents and big names to their clubs, and on the other hand, Liverpool seem to have chosen to tie down their core players to the club with long-term contracts.

Ibrahima Konate was the only substantial transfer to take place in the last transfer window for the Reds when it came to incomings.
