In a transfer window that has seen Messi move to PSG, Ronaldo move to United, Lukaku move to Chelsea, and Griezmann return to Atletico, we have heard barely a peep from Liverpool. The former Premier League champions have operated very much under the radar after a season that many would have assumed would see them working hard to sign reinforcements.
As far as title defenses go, Liverpool endured a season that made it exceedingly difficult for them to retain their title. The 20/21 season was characterised by injury after injury. Most notably in the defensive region, where they lost both center backs to long term injuries, and eventually even to those covering in this position.
As a result, many would have assumed that at the turn of the new season, Klopp and co. would get out the cheque books to throw money at the problem. Instead, Liverpool secured the services of a much needed defensive reinforcement in the form of up and coming Frenchman Ibrahima Konate, but that was it.
While it was in the defensive region that Liverpool suffered most last season, they saw some major outgoings in the recent transfer window that seemed as necessary motivation to sign some new players. For one, the Reds now have a giant Wijnaldum shaped hole in midfield, as the Dutchman departed for the Parc de Princes, and further lost the services of wideman Xherdan Shaqiri, who also left for France.
Despite these key departures, soccer betting sites far and wide have still pegged Liverpool as one of the most likely teams to pick up this year’s English Premier League title. While last season’s champions Manchester City, and Champions League winners Chelsea are currently battling it out as the two teams have been given the shortest odds, Liverpool are still worth a punt for adding to their trophy cabinet.
If we take a brief look over their squad, we can see why bookmakers have tended to favour the Scousers for another title winning season. While Alisson was sidelined for some of last season due to injury, he is arguably the best keeper in the league. When looking upon the four men in front of him, you’ll find very few defences of such a pedigree in England, if not Europe. A back four headed up by Virgil Van Dijk that has recently been added to with Konate is certainly one that can be seen as title winning.
If we look into midfield, we see a wealth of options. The likes of Fabinho, Thiago, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson and James Milner make up just a few of the options the Reds have to draw from. What’s more, is that in each case, you find a hard working technically sound player, who suits the evergreen Klopp press. It has been reported that Klopp favours a midfield three consisting of Fabino, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago.
And lastly in attack we have one of the more exciting attacking trios in Europe, who are being kept honest by an industrious Diogo Jota, who has regularly broken into a front three that historically consisted of Sadio Mane, Bobby Firminho, and Mo Salah. Not bad at all.
As you can see, despite a quiet transfer window, Liverpool are more than capable of pushing for another Premier League title. While it’d be no walk in the park, as many of their fierce rivals have strengthened, Liverpool are certainly willing and able to get the job done.
