Liverpool keen to trump European bigwigs for Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland next summer
According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are looking to beat fellow European giants to the signature of Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland next summer.
The Norwegian striker has become a global sensation with his performances in recent years. The goal-scoring machine has already netted 68 goals in 67 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions since joining the Germans in January 2020.
The 21-year-old striker scored 27 goals in 28 Bundesliga matches for the German side last season, a tally bettered by only Robert Lewandowski and Andre Silva. The Norwegian has made goalscoring an artform attracting attention from both Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool had a relatively quiet summer transfer window with Ibrahima Konate the only major first team addition. The Merseysiders however cannot afford to stay still next time around and will need to make moves of their own.
The 21-year-old would definitely upset the attacking hierarchy at Anfield. But with Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino showing signs of decline, the Reds would be better off replacing them sooner than later.
In Haaland, they will get themselves an infallible scorer who can lead the line for years to come. The 21-year-old’s €75m (£66m) release clause gets activated in the summer of 2022, meaning he can be obtained for an absolute bargain. Whether the Reds will come out on top remains to be seen.
Target Dortmund?
Haaland is not the only Dortmund ace that the Reds have set their sights on. Liverpool have also shown an interest in signing Haaland’s current teammate Jude Bellingham.
Both the youngsters have been on the radar of quite a few clubs in Europe, especially given their performances in recent times. While it would be fanciful to suggest Liverpool can sign both players, even one of them would add much to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

There is little reason to suggest Haaland won’t be a hit at Anfield should he make the move. However, with a number of clubs in the fray and superagent Mino Raiola pulling the shots, a deal is easier said than done.
Haaland has played at Anfield before during his time at RB Salzburg. He found the back of the net on the night but failed to impress in the return leg in Austria. There is little doubt that he has grown since then.
