“He is the best”: Liverpool ace dismisses comparisons with superstar teammate

Liverpool ace Ibrahima Konate dismisses Virgil van Dijk comparison; talks about club’s silverware prospects

In conversation with Sky Sports (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool new boy Ibrahima Konate spoke about comparisons with Virgil van Dijk and the club’s chances of lifting silverware this season.

The Reds had a relatively quiet transfer window this season. Ibrahima Konate was the only major signing to arrive at Anfield. The 22-year-old provides some much-needed backup in central defence.

The Merseysiders had to suffer a grave injury crisis last term and the centre-backs were the most affected. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip were injured for extended periods of last season. This meant that Klopp was without a strong defensive partnership at the back.

Konate has made a steady start to the Premier League as he started in the 3-0 victory against Crystal Palace in their last fixture. He also started the Carabao Cup fixture against Norwich as Liverpool recorded another 3-0 win.

The Frenchman has been likened to superstar teammate Virgil van Dijk and Konate shared his thoughts on comparison with the Dutchman.

“No, no. I don’t think I can compare with Virgil because he showed to the world that he is the best defender. Me, no. I hope with time, I can show this.”

There are concerns regarding the depth of this Liverpool squad, especially with a hectic schedule coming up. Klopp has been smart in rotating his players at the start of the season. Matip, Gomez, Konate and van Dijk have all featured this season.

The Reds have managed to keep a tight ship at the back and have only conceded one goal in the PL this season. The former RB Salzburg man is a firm believer that the Merseyside team can challenge for different titles this season.

“We have to be focused game by game; we have Champions League and a lot of games. With this team, I think we can do a big thing this season.”

that Liverpool could achieve success this season but the Reds will have to maintain the fitness of their core players for this to happen.
