Jamie Carragher urges Jurgen Klopp to play a larger role in Mohamed Salah extending his stay at Liverpool
Writing for The Telegraph (h/t Express), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed his confusion over Jurgen Klopp and his role in keeping Mohamed Salah at the club.
The Reds handed out several new contracts to first-team stars earlier this summer. It formed the bedrock of the summer business for the club as they sought to secure the futures of their big names than splashing the cash on new faces.
One player, however, who is still to pen a new deal is Salah. The Egyptian is arguably the club’s biggest asset and has already written his name into Liverpool folklore.
According to the report, the 29-year-old has two years left on his current deal and is holding out for a bigger deal. The Reds, however, appear reluctant to meet the player’s demands
Klopp recently admitted that he is playing no role in talks, forcing Carragher to urge him to change that. He is keen for the Liverpool boss to take a proactive role. Given that the boss had helped smooth over talks with Jordan Henderson earlier in the summer, his non-appearance regarding Salah is puzzling.
“That seems odd. If there is a sound reason for not resolving the Salah contract situation with the same urgency, it is yet to be satisfactorily explained.”
A match made in heaven?
Carragher is a fan of Liverpool’s recruitment policy and believes the club has done well to nurture and develop talent. It will however amount to little if the players do not stay on in their peak years.
“They get so much right. But surely once you have helped nurture one of the world’s best – and made him a positive global symbol of your club – you want to cherish that and channel resources to keep him for all of his peak, goalscoring years?”
He also believes the Egyptian could struggle to repeat the same heroics elsewhere. Salah’s game is tailored to Liverpool and he has already etched his name into the club’s record books. It is in everyone’s interest to continue the association.
“Twenty-five years from now, fans will examine this era and consider how lucky they were to witness Salah’s goal feats. They will rewatch the videos and see his statistics with a sense of awe.”

Salah is one of the players who will go down as a club legend. His numbers speak for themselves and none who have seen him in action will forget this era in a hurry. It is only befitting that he is given a contract that rewards his contributions to the club.
