Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could be offered the coaching role at Newcastle United

According to talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil (h/t Express), Rangers F.C. manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could be in line to take over the managerial role at Newcastle United.

The 41-year-old led the Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership in 10 years the last season. An excellent accomplishment for a budding manager finding his feet in the game.

Gerrard is one of the best players to don the Red jersey and had led the Merseysiders to European glory on quite a few occasions with some stunning displays. The English international was a great servant to the club and scored 186 goals while providing 150 assists in 710 games across all competitions.

Newcastle have had a tough start to life this season and are currently in the19th position in the Premier League table. Manager Steve Bruce is under tremendous pressure to deliver results and will need to do so soon.

A Saudi Arabia takeover of the club seems imminent now. This could mean a significant injection of financial resources into the Tyneside club. According to the report, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will own 80 percent of the Magpies, with British businesswoman Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers sharing the remaining 20 per cent amongst them equally.

Alan Brazil, the former Scotland international, made his views on the current situation known in conversation with Ally McCoist:

“If Steven Gerrard comes down. What is it – 100 miles to Newcastle? Waits for Jurgen to head off into green pastures and slips in because I think Amanda Staveley is a big Liverpool fan. It all fits in. It all fits in, of course it does.”

Staveley is considered a ‘big Liverpool fan’ and this may have a significant impact on any decision that could be made. Despite the wonderful work that Gerrard has done with the Scottish club, the Premier League is a whole different ball game with much higher stakes.

Jurgen Klopp’s current contract with the Merseysiders runs out in 2024. Steven Gerrard knows the dynamics of this club and could be a suitable replacement to the German manager who has achieved great things since taking over at Anfield.

These are still early days and any such move Gerrard can make to the Magpies is very tentative at this stage. That being said it only feels like a matter of time when the Reds legend will return to Anfield to take up a management role at the club.

Whether this involves a path via St James’ Park remains to be seen.
