Team News and Injury Update: Atletico Madrid to welcome back key stars ahead of Liverpool clash
According to Mundo Deportivo via Football Espana (h/t Liverpool Echo), Atletico Madrid look set to welcome back a number of stars ahead of their clash with Liverpool. Both sides face off in the Champions League at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will be travelling to the Spanish capital to take on the La Liga champions this Tuesday. This will be an important match for both teams as they look to negotiate what is arguably the group of death.
Liverpool goes into the game having won their first two games against Porto and AC Milan. The Reds also thrashed Watford 5-0 at the weekend and look ready for the challenge this week. Diego Simeone’s side was not in action at the weekend after their clash against Granada was postponed.
Not only will the Spaniards be well-rested but will also welcome back a number of players to the lineup. Jose Gimenez and Marcos Llorente have both been involved in the full training session ahead of the game. Summer signing Matheus Cunha is also in contention for the game despite suffering a knock.
With Gimenez’s recovery, the Argentine manager would not have to worry about the centre-back situation. The Merseyside club will be wary of Llorente after he scored two goals in their 2-3 defeat at Anfield in 2020.
Simeone’s side is coming off the back of a commanding 2-0 win over FC Barcelona before the international break. The Spanish side will undoubtedly be the biggest threat to Liverpool topping the group.

Liverpool have looked imperious in the Champions League so far. Both sides remain unbeaten and a win on the night will go a long way to guaranteeing their qualification for the round of 16.
More so, taking down the side that knocked them out in 2020 will be an excellent morale booster. There are few sides better in world football than Simeone’s Atletico at parking the bus. Just how Liverpool choose to negotiate it remains to be seen.
