“Not healthy”- Rival manager reveals his reason for unsportsmanlike conduct against Klopp

Diego Simeone explains his reasons for not accepting a handshake from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

According to Metro, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has given his reasons for rejecting a handshake from his Liverpool counterpart, Jurgen Klopp. Simeone’s side was on the wrong end of the result as they lost 2-3 to the Reds at home.

The La Liga champions were left shellshocked as Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead. While they eventually fought back to level the scores, Antoine Grizemann’s sending off shifted the pendulum back in Liverpool’s favour.

The fixture was eventually decided when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Diogo Jota by Mario Hermoso. Salah slotted the penalty past Jan Oblak and the visitors held on for a famous win.

One of the standout moments in the tie occurred at full time when a usually animated Simone ran down the tunnel without shaking Klopp’s hand. Rather than give a valid reason he appears to ramble on about not liking what is a show of decency.

“I don’t always greet (the other manager) after the game because I don’t like it. It’s not healthy for either the winner or the loser. I think of it that way.”

Cholo Simeone further added that he has no issue with Jurgen Klopp and would be greeting him without a grudge next time. Knowing Klopp, her will only be too happy to oblige.

The Reds boss had also given his thoughts surrounding the situation in his post-match interview to BT Sport (h/t Metro). He said:

“He was obviously angry not with me, but with the game, the world and it’s nothing else.”

For all the shithousery that Simone’s side is famous for, he sure appears to have thin skin. While attitude certainly matters, being a bad sport is also something to avoid.

Atletico are set to face the Merseyside club in the reverse fixture at Anfield. Hopefully El Cholo will be on the losing side once again and will have enough grace to show some sportsmanship. A long shot but still worth a punt.
