Paul Scholes backs Liverpool to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title
According to the Mirror, Paul Scholes has given his verdict on the title race this season by naming Liverpool and Manchester United as Premier League title favourites.
His declaration comes after the Reds’ convincing 5-0 win against Manchester United, He believes Jurgen Klopp’s side are now the team to beat but believes Manchester City will give them a fight.
Liverpool barely got out of second gear but looked scintillating at Old Trafford. Their front three looks hungry for goals again this season and the defence is once again a force to be reckoned with.
Egyptian superstar, Mohamed Salah has been the major man, scoring in his 10th consecutive league game at the weekend. Liverpool is the only unbeaten team this season in the Premier League and looks ready to bring home number 20 this season.
The performance at Old Trafford has not just raised eyebrows but amplified expectations on Klopp’s side. Scholes believes this kind of form will stir City’s dressing room and make them uncomfortable.
“Seeing Liverpool go to Old Trafford and win so convincingly, I think it will make City worry.”
Pep Guardiola’s squad are the defending champions and a formidable side in their own right. The draw they earned at Anfield earlier this season showcased their credentials. It is not every day that Liverpool struggle against sides at their fortress.
The dark horses?
Many experts have also thrown Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea team into the title mix. The Blues are now top of the table, one point above Liverpool. But according to Scholes, they won’t be able to match the consistency of Liverpool and City this season.
“Chelsea… I’m not sure, they have been great and I think they are better than I actually give them credit for but I think it’s between Liverpool and Manchester City.”
Chelsea already lost to Manchester City at home this season. Maybe that’s the reason Scholes has ruled them out. But in the all English Champions League final last season, the Blues was able to outperform City. Tuchel’s side is not to be underestimated.
