Walter Sabatini admits he is surprised that Liverpool didn’t pursue Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa this summer
According to CalcioNapoli24 (h/t Liverpool Echo), a former Italian sporting director Walter Sabatini has revealed his amazement at Liverpool not pursuing Fulham star Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa earlier this summer.
The 25-year-old midfielder left Fulham after they were relegated to the English Championship in the summer joining Italian giants Napoli on a season-long loan deal. He has made 13 appearances for the club this season and has helped them race to the top of the Serie A table.
Sabatini who has in the past served as a director at Lazio, Roma and Sampdoria, among a host of others, says he’s surprised the Reds didn’t sign Anguissa.
“I am amazed that the two Manchester teams, Chelsea and Liverpool did not arrive on a Fulham player.”
Instead, it is Napoli who are reaping the benefits. The Gli Azzurri can make the loan deal permanent at the end of the season, with a £12m fee being touted. Given the performances he has put up, it is nothing short of a steal.
The Cameroon international has been in decent form since joining the Serie A club. Napoli are currently unbeaten and sit three points off the top of the table with a game in hand on leaders AC Milan.

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool were linked with multiple players following the exit of Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in the summer, leaving a spot open in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.
But things didn’t materialise and Jurgen Klopp opted not to pursue another midfielder. Centre-back Ibrahima Konate was the only first-team addition in the summer.

With youngster Harvey Elliott starting the season brightly, it can be argued that an effort was made to promote from within. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious injury against Leeds United and will be out for some time now.
The Reds are currently second in the points table in the Premier League and remain unbeaten in all competitions. They have also made it to the quarter-final stage of the Carabao Cup.
