“Moment will come”- Klopp admits underused first-team star will get chances

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admits that Joe Gomez must wait for his moment this season

According to the Liverpool Echo, Jurgen Klopp accepted that it’s not easy for Joe Gomez currently as he isn’t getting much playing time in a Liverpool jersey. The German coach also touched upon the abundant riches he posesses for the centre back position at this moment in time. 

The 24-year-old was a regular starter for Klopp’s team when they lifted their long awaited maiden Premier League trophy in 2020. He played 43 matches in total for the Reds in that historic season.

But things changed last season when Liverpool suffered a massive deficit in the centre back position due to injuries to key players. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Gomez all suffered injuries that sidelined them for months altogether.

Recently Gomez made a comeback from injury and is now back to full fitness. But he’s yet to get the regular chances from the manager. He has so far made just seven appearanes so far this season.

Joel Matip and Virgil Van Dijk have become fit and started the season as the club’s first choice centre-back pairing. Ibrahima Konate’s arrival from RB Leipzig in the summer gave Klopp yet another dependable centre-back on his books. Leipzig. With Matip out, he stepped in for our trip to Old Trafford and expertly marshalling CristianO Ronaldo on the night.

Klopp is mostly interchanging between these three players for the starter centre back partnership for the Premier league and Champion league games. Two of Gomez’s three starts this season came in the Carabao Cup.

Strength in depth!

While Klopp sympathises with Gomez but admits that he cannot do much for him because he has too many ‘top-class players’ in that position and will need to wait for his chance.

“It was always like this in football – the only thing you can do is keep working really, really hard, and your moment will come.”

The 54 years praised the English player for his professionalism and attitude despite not getting the playing time. The season is still in it’s infancy and every first team player will get a chance in the coming months.

“All five of the boys get on really well with each other, which is really nice to see. We will need them, and we will need Joe, and Joe’s quality is incredible, we all know that.”

Though Liverpool have many good quality players and performance will play a key role in who plays and who doesn’t.

Gomez is despite his age a veteran at the club and has time and again shown off his competence. As long as he keeps working and remains patient, the season could yet turn into a special one for him.
