Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur close in on Liverpool target Franck Kessie
According to Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool could miss out on Franck Kessie as Tottenham Hotspur close in on securing his services.
The Ivory Coast international is a key player for AC Milan and played a key role in their efforts to secure Champions League qualification last season. He has however failed to perform at a similar level this season, scoring just two goals in 10 games for the Italian club across all competitions.
But more than goals and assists, the 24-year-old player continues to be a tour de force in midfield. Moreover, the has time and again proven to be a rock-solid star, stopping many lethal attacks from opponent teams.
The Liverpool midfield is a competent bunch but are not getting any younger. An infusion of youth is more of a necessity than a luxury in the windows to come. But it would appear that Tottenham are ‘close’ to signing the player themselves.
Spurs recently appointed Antonio Conte as their head manager, replacing Nuno Espírito Santo. With the Italian now at the helm, the North Londoners are now looking to secure their playing staff.
Kessie could earn €10million (£8.5million) per season if he agrees to the terms with Tottenham. Moreover, the midfielder’s agent would also secure ‘monster fees’ from the deal. Unless Liverpool can offer a better move, we might as well give up on landing him.
With his current contract is ending next summer, Kessie could potentially be on the move on a free transfer. Whether this will force Milan to sell him on the cheap in January rather than lose him for nothing remains to be seen.

Liverpool are currently a better team than Tottenham and are more likely to compete for the biggest trophies. In Jurgen Klopp, they also have a manager capable of trumping Conte’s tactics.
If money is the deciding factor, it is better that Kessie moves to Tottenham over Liverpool. The Reds can do without a player who isn’t committed to the cause.
