Liverpool are interested in Lille forward Jonathan David

According to French publication L’Equipe (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are keen on luring LOSC Lille youngster Jonathan David to Anfield.

The 21-year-old has been putting some electrifying performance in Ligue 1. This season he already has 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions, and as a matter of fact, he is the top scorer of the French league. In a league where Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar plays, coming on the top can be considered a significant achievement.

Having won the title with Lile last season, David has intentions to step up his game and play in a more competitive league.  It is something Liverpool can provide.

It is believed that Liverpool are keen on signing the Canada international, and Jurgen Klopp’s team could leverage his desire to lure him to the Premier League. However, the Reds would have to match Lille’s asking price of €35million (£29.7million) in order to engage in talks.

The Merseyside team is set to lose star forward Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to the African Cup of Nations tournament for several weeks. David would become a great help in these situations as he has already proved his goalscoring abilities and aggressiveness in big stages.

But, Reds’ long term need is greater than the short term solution. Jurgen Klopp’s team will need to add to his ageing frontline sooner or later. It is better to be prepared beforehand so that the transition phase occurs smoothly.

David is only 21-year of age, and if he keeps his current form, he could become a top striker in the coming years. It would be an excellent opportunity for the German manager to form a plan for the future and leave a strong team behind for his successor.
