Jurgen Klopp lauded Nat Phillips for showcasing amazing piece of skill aginst AC Milan
According to the Metro, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp termed the fantastic skills of Nat Phillips in the Reds penalty area as the highlight of the Reds’ win against Milan.
The Reds secured a historic win last night against AC Milan at the San Siro to end the Champions League group stage with a 100 percent record. This season, the consecutive sixth group match win made Liverpool the first English team to achieve the feat.
Even though the Egyptian ‘king’ Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi netted one goal each to make it 2-1 for the visitors. However, the Merseyside team’s fifth choice defender Nathaniel Phillips attracted all the attention with fabulous skills.
While defending against Milan forwards in the Liverpool penalty area, Ibrahima Konaté’s back pass fell onto Phillips’ right leg. Two Rossonerri stars swiftly ran towards the goal facing English defender in order to press him. However, despite being in a tight situation, Nat didn’t lose his cool and turned with the ball, leaving both Milan stars behind.
Later in the post-game interview, when asked about the incident, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp lauded the 24-year-old player and suggested that it was probably the game’s pivotal moment.
“Yeah, that was the moment of the night – c’mon, the game he played was outstanding, it’s really ridiculous!” he said.”
Phillips played many top-flight games last season in the absence of main defenders. However, he hasn’t received many chances to showcase his abilities this season. This season the British defender has only featured in four games, and last night was his first Champions League outing.
After the comeback of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip from their respective injury breaks, Klopp is spoilt for choice. Phillips makes for a sensational fifth choice centre-back, displaying the Reds’ depth in the position.
