Jurgen Klopp suggests Liverpool won’t be able to catch Manchester City this season

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suggested that if his team continues playing like last night, they won’t catch Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the title race this season. 

Liverpool had a night to forget at King Power Stadium. Jurgen Klopp’s incredible front lineup, which has been in scintillating form this season, failed to score against Leicester. After Mohamed Salah missed the chance to net the ball from the penalty spot, Foxes’ Ademola Lookman came from the bench to hurt Liverpool.

The Leicester forward scored the match’s only goal in the 59th minute to grab the win for Brendan Rodgers’ team. We had only ourselves to blame as Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota, and Salah all missed chances to score and were often wasteful in possession. Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold also had a game to forget.

The defeat to Leicester last night has put Liverpool at a significant disadvantage against Manchester City in the title race. After losing last night’s match, we trail them by 6 points while being level with Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea on 41 points.

Chelsea will now face Jurgen Klopp’s team on Sunday.

“Chelsea and us play against each other, so we cannot both get the points.”

The scenario is a massive boost for Manchester City, who can turn this year’s Premier League into a one-horse title race. A draw may just be the ideal result for them, especially if they themselves beat Brentford tonight to open up a 9-point gap having then played a game more than us and the Blues.

Klopp suggested that it wasn’t his intention to benefit Pep Guardiola’s team. 

“Sorry for that, but it was not our plan tonight to give City the chance to run away or whatever.”

However, the former Dortmund manager also revealed that last night’s performance was poor, and by playing such type of football, Liverpool wouldn’t get near the Citizens in the title race. 

“But if we play like tonight, we don’t have to think about catching up with City. But if we play our normal football, we can win normal football games.”

The defeat against Leicester has surely put Liverpool on the backfoot. However, Jurgen Klopp has no one to blame but his own players. The Reds forward failed to get the job done even with massive chances in the game. The Merseyside team currently holds the top-two spot in the leading scorers and top assist-providers list.

Last night’s defeat is difficult to digest for sure, especially when we had the chance to recoup from the Carabao Cup quarter-final win against the same opposition. Our fixture against Leeds United on Boxing Day was postponed, which handed us a short-term fitness advantage that we clearly failed to take yesterday.
