Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director confirms Denis Zakaria will leave amid Liverpool interest
According to Borussia.de (h/t Mirror), Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director has confirmed that Denis Zakaria has communicated his intentions to not renew his contract amid interest from Liverpool.
The Swiss international has developed into a consistent performer for the Bundesliga side over the years. The 25-year-old has proven to be a solid option in the midfield, and his impeccable passing abilities coupled with his ability to read the game make him a daunting opponent.
The Swiss star has featured in 16 matches across all competitions has made excellent contributions to his side’s performance in this campaign.
Zakaria is entering the final six months of his contract and hasn’t signed a renewal yet. However, he intends to maintain the status quo and will be moving away from Borussia Park.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Zakaria in recent times. Therefore, the news could be a massive boost for Jurgen Klopp, who would now have the chance to bolster his midfield options.
Liverpool suffered a mini-crisis during the season’s early stages with the injury concerns to key midfield players. Even though the Reds have survived the phase and enjoyed a successful run in the last couple of months, the Covid-19 surge has again created problems. Curtis Jones and Thiago Alcântara were both sidelined and missed a few games in recent weeks.
In his latest press conference, Klopp revealed further Covid cases in the squad. So the Coronavirus situation is far from over, and some players will need to be isolated for another few weeks.
On top of that, Naby Keita will surely miss a majority of matches in January due to national duties at the African Cup of Nations. Therefore, Jurgen Klopp could require some reinforcements regarding the midfield lineup next month to tackle the situation.
Even though Reds can get the Swiss star for free in the summer, a buyout attempt in the January transfer window wouldn’t be a bad idea.
