Transfer News: Liverpool are thought to be interested in LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David
According to Juenesfooteux (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in Canadian striker Jonathan David. He is also attracting interest from the likes of Newcastle United and Arsenal.
The 22-year-old has been a revelation for LOSC Lille in the last couple of seasons. The French club won the Ligue 1 last season, triumphing over Paris Saint-Germain in the last campaign. The young striker played an important role in helping Les Dogues achieve this feat by recording 13 goals and three assists in 37 matches in the French top flight.
The Canadian has continued that form this season having already bagged 16 goals in 34 matches across all competitions for Lille this season. His performances on the pitch haven’t gone noticed and some of the top clubs in England are now being linked to the 22-year-old.
The Anfield outfit already possesses some great forwards in their lineup with the feared attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane. The Reds have also done well to add younger reinforcements in the form of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
Liverpool and how a young striker could pay long-term dividends
Whilst both Jota and Diaz are starting to make a great impact on the team none of them are out and out strikers. Thus bringing in a young striker who can make a suitable impact as well as become a long-term dependable option could be the right step forward.
David fits this bill perfectly and at 22, still has some of his best footballing years ahead of him. He also suits the current Liverpool model of recruiting young players and then moulding them according to the needs and requirements of the club.
With Firmino now 30, the club could be looking to add a young replacement just to be on the safe side. This could also be a great move considering that the Reds compete on several fronts across the season and more squad depth would mean that they could preserve the core players of their squad without reducing the quality of their attack.
Adapting to the Premier League can be a tough task, especially due to the pace and intensity at which the game is played in England. This is even truer considering the fact that Jurgen Klopp demands a lot from his players to execute the Gegenpressing style of play.
