Caoimhin Kelleher opens up about his time at Liverpool and his future goals with the club

In a conversation with the Telegraph (subscription required), Irish goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher shares his side of the story about joining Liverpool and what he expects of himself.

The 23-year-old ace has quickly become the second choice keeper at Anfield ahead of Adrian who possesses a plethora of experience at the top level. Kelleher has slowly but surely become a dependable option between the sticks for the Merseysiders having played a pivotal role in their EFL Cup campaign this season.

The Irish shot-stopper has repaid the faith shown in him by Jurgen Klopp who would be pleased with his development at the club so far. The player has been biding his time and despite playing only 630 minutes for the Reds this season seems quite capable of taking over from Alisson Becker when the time is right.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Kelleher opened up about the kind of work it took to reach the level that he is at right now. He also believes that there is still a long way to go if he is to reach the top of his game.

“I have had belief in myself since I came over that I can do it, but it has taken a lot of hard work and a lot of coaching sessions to bring me on. I am nowhere near the highest level yet. I think I have a long way to go if I want to reach that, but I’ve always had belief in myself that I can play here and obviously playing games for the first team and performing relatively well gives you the extra boost of confidence that you are good enough.”

The defensive department was a huge issue when the former Borussia Dortmund manager took over at Anfield. The Reds lacked a solid central-defensive partnership and the goalkeeping department was also error-prone.

Whilst the Reds have spent a huge sum since then on cementing a solid defensive foundation by purchasing the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Alison, the club has also done quite the job of preparing suitable youngsters to take over once the time is right.

Kelleher is viewed as one such successor and is currently on a great trajectory to cement his position in this Reds squad in the future. Jurgen Klopp is also thought to stick by his decision and could give Caoimhin a chance between the sticks in the EFL Cup final against Chelsea.

This could be a big step in the career of the budding professional keeper. The Irish professional footballer would be hoping to make an impact and show that he is one for the future. Whilst this could be a lot of pressure on young shoulders, Kelleher affirms that he likes to take things as they come instead of pondering too much on the pivotal fixture.
