Liverpool vs Manchester United will be moved to another date due to fixture pile-up

According to the Mirror, the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester United is set to be postponed due to a fixture pile-up for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The two heavyweights in English football faced off earlier this season when Klopp’s men trashed United 5-0 at Old Trafford. A lot of things have changed at United since, with Ralf Ragnick replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the Red Devils manager.

The highly-anticipated clash was supposed to be held on Sunday, March 20th but Liverpool will not be available to play the game after progressing through to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup after a 2-1 win over Norwich City last night courtesy of a Takumi Minamino brace.

United’s FA Cup run, meanwhile, ended in the previous round after losing to Middlesbrough on penalties. Boro are also through to the next round after an extra-time win against Tottenham Hotspur and will be in the draw to potentially take on Liverpool in the last 8.

A welcome news

The derby between Liverpool and Man United will now be pushed to later in the campaign but while there is no confirmation yet, there is a suggestion that it may take place on the 19th or 20th of April. Both Liverpool and United are still going strong in the Champions League, which further reduces the possibility of available midweeks.

Liverpool’s fixture congestion is a testament to their outstanding form this season. The Merseysiders are in the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple and have already secured the Carabao Cup by defeating Chelsea in the finals.

Having progressed to the quarter-finals in the FA Cup, Liverpool have a 2-0 advantage against Inter from the first leg in Milan and are expected to progress to the next round. The Reds are behind Man City in the Premier League by 6 points, and with a game in hand, they are still very much in the title race.

Liverpool have a gruelling schedule ahead and Klopp will have to be on top of his game managing his squad, as he hopes to have all his players fit and firing as they approach the business end of the season.

With the game against United set to be postponed, Liverpool will have a 2-game advantage over City and with a trip to the Etihad Stadium still pending, Liverpool’s quest for a quadruple does not seem unrealistic after all.

While this postponement doesn’t do a lot in terms of handing a tangible advantage, it is certainly welcome news that the game will now be played at a time when there won’t be any clashes with other fixtures. As for the Cup game that will take place in the last 8, it remains to be seen if Klopp uses the fringe players in that game to give a much-needed breather to first-team stars amidst such a pileup.
